The Renasa Insurance Champion of Champions 2018

HISTORY OF THE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS The original idea of bringing together the men’s champion of every club in Kwa-Zulu Natal was the brainchild of the late Des Hamilton, a past Captain of Kloof. Since that occasion 46 years ago when the first ever Champion of Champions was held with such outstanding success, this golf tournament has grown in stature and popularity year by year. It has produced many top winners since Pat Kennedy of Zululand defied the elements in a storm-drenched first final (his group even survived a lightning strike). He set the pattern for a tournament that has now become a household name in Kwa-Zulu Natal golf circles. Internationals such as Brian Turner, David Suddards & locals like Derek James, Tim Clark, Bradley Davison, Mark Cox & Jared Harvey are some of the competitors who have graced the winner’s podium. The Ladies Champion of Champions was inaugurated in 1977 and for the last eleven years has been played over two days in conjunction with the men’s tournament. MESSAGE FROM KLOOF COUNTRY CLUB GOLF CAPTAINS It is a great honour to welcome all of the competitor’s to the 2018 Renasa Champion of Champions tournament held at Kloof Country Club. In its 46th year of us hosting this prestige’s event, we all of our members, staff, myself and lady captain wish you the very best of luck for this wonderful weekend of golf. We are indeed honoured to have both the Club Strokeplay and Matchplay Champions here present with us. And as such the winners of the tournament will follow in the footsteps of some of the top golfers of Kwazulu Natal whom have played and won this very same tournament. To win your home Club Championship is a magnificent accomplishment in its own right but to win this event and be crowned the Champion of Champions is a lifetime title that a good number will aspire to but only a magnificent few will ever achieve. You heard right! This Friday, 13th July Kloof Country Club hosts The GEE JAY’S LIVE for a once off FREE event!  Come ready to rock and roll the night away under the stars and tuck into market style food and beverages that will be on special. This not to be missed event starts at 18h00 with The GEE JAY’S opening the floor as the moon rises. There will not be any pre-booked tables for this particular event, so please come early to secure your spots.  Also, we advise that you wrap up warm as there will be a winter chill. The Veranda Restaurant will be open and it’s specials will be available, however bookings for any of these specials or the restaurant is essential and limited on 031 764 0555. Kloof Country Club & Lost Souls – Smooth Sunday…

On Sunday, 1st July Lost Souls Animal Rescue joined forces with Kloof Country Club for a fundraiser unlike any other. The event began in the early evening an ran right through until sunset, with music flowing across the verdant hills of Kloof. Parable 15 kick started the event at 14h30, followed by LMB and finishing off with Twobob Garage Band. Fun was had by everyone, including young and small. Kloof Country Club is thrilled to have been a part of this great fundraiser for Lost Souls Animal Rescue.

The Hill’s Retirement Communities Golf Day – An entirely different game!

On Tuesday, 22nd of June, ‘The Hills Retirement Community (THRC)’ hosted a Golf Day at Kloof Country Club, with a difference… The players were invited to play for free – Imagine that! It was a ‘freebie!’ In a society where it has become widely accepted that there are no free lunches, imagine the consternation and disbelief when players were informed that they would be required to pay nothing; that their entrance fees, halfway lunches and drinks were all courtesy of the THRC. And, going even further, there were to be no fund-raising projects such as raffles, or donation requests on the day. (In fact a few golfers, who did offer to contribute to the event, were baffled when their kind offers were politely declined). And that was not all! The prizes were such as had never before been encountered by players before; they were totally bizarre! For example when players approached the 18th green (the deciding green for the ‘hole-in-one’ competition), instead of the customary BMW or Jaguar cars alongside the green, they were amazed to see a frail care bed, a commode, and a sign which announced that first prize was one weeks stay in KRH Frail care Home; with second prize being two weeks; and even stranger the sign went on to offer a Loo-with-a- view as a consolation prize. (One golfer was even heard to remark that he was puzzled as to whether the view referred to was that from the loo; or of the loo in action?) But that was not the only surprise in store for the golfers. Unknown to them, their game was being observed by a well known eye-specialist – Dr. Izzy Dorff, and during the course of the competition, he handed out vouchers for free eye tests. The vouchers mostly went to people who (from the standard of their putting), obviously had difficulty in seeing the hole; however some golfers even appeared unable to make out the green or fairway, as they kept landing on adjacent fairways. For these, although Dr. Dorff undertook to honour his promise of free eye tests, he cautioned that even with new glasses, he doubted whether it would make any difference to the quality of their game. He suggested that perhaps they should consider taking up a game such as bowls, as they obviously needed bigger balls! But why did THRC host this strange event. And especially… why would they do so on a free and gratis basis? (After all they are a non-profit company?) Unlike many other retirement communities in South Africa, The Hills Retirement Community stands out from the crowd! And it was to create awareness of The Kloof Rest Home Associations new brand – The Hills Retirement Community, that they hosted such a different game of golf.
